We complete our 'Piano Series' with a visit from one of the most individual artists to appear on the UK jazz scene over the past fifty years, whose influence as a teacher and mentor to younger musicians has perhaps sometimes overshadowed his immense gifts as a player and composer. In the 1960s and early'70s Michael Garrick was a major player in a string of fine bands, most notably the Don Rendell-Ian Carr Quintet, but his recorded output over the following twenty years was pretty sporadic and low key. For the past 15 years, however, there has been a steady flow of exhilarating albums, generally also involving drummer Alan Jackson, who forms part of the excellent trio that comes to Gateshead Old Town Hall for this gig. With the dynamic young bassist Matt Ridley also in the line-up, this promises to be a memorable finale to the series.
