A welcome return to the Corner House for a quartet that played a tremendous Jazz North East gig back in March 2007. Since then they've had a change of guitarists, and adopted the French version of their previous name (they were "Djangology"). but the essential commitment to music rooted in the classic 1930s sound of Django Reinhardt and the Hot Club de France remains absolutely at the heart of their approach.

In Jim Birkett and Giles Strong the group boasts two players who combine immense versatility with a profound love and understanding of the whole history of jazz guitar, while violinist Emma Fisk takes the swing of Stéphane Grappelli but also imbues it with traces of the country rock which is her other great musical passion. And founder member Mick Shoulder anchors the whole thing with a big bass sound and a driving rhythmic pulse.

Hot Club inspired bands are far from a rarity on the UK jazz scene, but what marks out Djangologie as something special is that way in which they take up the original spirit and breathe fresh life into it, with a mix of tunes from the '30s and original compositions drawing on the tradition - this is inspired hommage rather than deferential homage.

But however you choose to describe the music, one thing is indisputable - it really is trés bonne.
