Formed under the auspices of the regional jazz development agency JazzAction, Free Spirits brings together four superb musicians from differing backgrounds. Dharambir Singh and Bhupinder Singh Chaggar have both studied with leading maestros from the Indian classical tradition, but have readily adapted their improvising skills to a jazz context. Lewis Watson and Neil Harland both have jazz as their first love (although Neil is also active in folk music), but are sufficiently flexible to adopt elements of Indian raga in their playing. Together the four have succeeded in creating an entirely fresh and convincing synthesis of musical traditions.
