One of the most widely respected figures in free improvisation, Steve Beresford is listed on one website as a composer, arranger, and performer on piano. trumpet, euphonium, voice, low grade electronics, bass guitar, and small instruments - and that's just a random selection!
His involvement in music began while studying at the University of York, where he organised musical and theatrical events as well as playing himself in genres as diverse as soul music and free improvisation. After moving to London in 1974 he worked with most of the city's leading avant-garde players such as Derek Bailey and Lol Coxhill, and was also an early participant in the more experimental end of the punk movement in bands such as the Flying Lizards.
Over the past three decades he has continued to play free improvisation with such international luminaries as John Zorn, Tristan Honsinger and Han Bennink, as well as making a huge contribution to debate and dissemination of the music through his publications 'Music' and 'Collusion' and his leading role in the London Musicians Collective.
