Andy Champion is one of the busiest and most respected musicians in the more straightahead North East jazz world, working across the range from accompanying vocalists to laying down the bass for the Voice of the North big band. Recently, though, he's been increasingly drawn to the more experimental end of the spectrum, and has become one of the key figures on the area's developing improv scene. Much of his free work has been done with loops and other electronic interventions, either in solo performance, or in the duo Chikon with Dave Black providing additional live samples. But monthly improv sessions at Newcastle's Side Caf have also seen him developing his changes-free acoustic repertoire, mixing still jazzy riffs with percussive effects that utilise every part of the instrument.
