Combining advanced microtonal techniques with a relentless swing, Mat Maneri's playing straddles the whole history of jazz fiddle, absolutely committed to freedom yet with a funky simplicity reminiscent of pioneers like Stuff Smith.

He has been an important member of New York's downtown scene for around 20 years, performing with such major figures as Tim Berne, William Parker, Joe McPhee and Cecil Taylor. A string of recordings, including the astonishing solo album 'Trinity', have been hailed for the "richly textured, beguiling and fiercely intelligent" qualities of his playing, with AllAboutJazz magazine declaring that Maneri "has changed the way the jazz world listens to the violin and viola".
