Mario Lima Caribé da Rocha, to give him his full name, was born in 1964 in S£o Paulo, Brazil, and began his musical education at the age of 13 playing Bossa Nova guitar. A year later he switched to electric bass, and was soon playing jazz gigs on the local scene. However, it was his time at Campinas University that really saw him break into the big time, on both the electric and acoustic instruments. For around ten years he was a member of leading Brazilian jazz group 'Heartbreakers', and his own sextet 'Hard Bop & Café', performing throughout South and Central America, until in 1996 he moved to Scotland to study, and has remained ever since. He was quickly spotted by Tommy Smith, and has worked regularly with Smith and many other luminaries of the Scottish scene, as well as providing rock solid bass accompaniment for such international stars as Joe Lovano, Bobby Watson and Sheila Jordan.
