James Maddren's parents both taught at Christ Hospital School, where music is an important part of the curriculum, so music was very much part of his environment almost from birth. By his teens he was concentrating on drums, and moved on to the Royal Academy of Music to study jazz percussion.

His superb technical fluency and the melodic nature of his playing has made him one of the most sought after drummers on the London scene, working with such other rising stars as pianists Gwilym Simcock, Ivo Neame and Kit Downes, and guitarists Jonathan Bratoeff and Mark McKnight.
