Something of a superstar in his native India, Ronu Majumdar also has a worldwide following for his work on the bansuri, a bamboo flute that was generally considered a folk instrument until its acceptance into Indian classical music around 50 years ago. Majumdar has extended the range of the instrument through the development of the 'shank bansuri', a three foot long version allowing greater depth at the lower end of the scales. As well as being a renowned performer in classical music, he has composed and performed extensively in various forms of crossover, including the Indo-Jazz fusion of Larry Coryell's Mumbai Jazz.
