Drummer Adrian Tilbrook has been a key participant in the North East jazz scene since the 1970s, both as a player and for around 26 years as the organiser of JazzAction, the jazz development agency for the region.
Prior to his appointment by the Arts Council to run JazzAction he was one of the rising drum stars of the UK scene, widely noticed for his work with jazz-rock legends Back Door and the acclaimed quartet Full Circle. From 1986 his new job rather curtailed his activities as a drummer, although he never stopped playing, anchoring the magnificent Voice of the North Jazz Orchestra from 1996, and two spin-offs from the Orchestra in Northern Brass and Splinter Group. In 2009 he became part of bassist Andy Champion's new quintet ACV, and a year later joined Andy and guitarist Chris Sharkey in the free improvising trio Spelk.
Since the winding up of JazzAction in September 2012 Adrian has been able to really concentrate on his first love - playing music - putting in an increasing number of club and festival appearances with ACV and Spelk, and also contributing mightily to occasional projects such as saxophonist Graeme Wilson's homage to the work of John Coltrane.
